Escalation guide

How to reach FMCSA (and actually get an answer)

FMCSA's help is procedural, not diagnostic: the agency publishes steps, not “your case means X.” These are the real channels, what each one is for, and the rule that decides whether your case moves — a complete first contact. Every Motus queue punishes partial tickets by restarting the review clock when the reviewer has to ask you for a document.

The channels

The escalation ladder, in order

  1. One complete ticket. Problem stated in the first sentence, USDOT number, proof pack attached. This is the rung everything else hangs from.
  2. Phone confirmation. Call 1-800-832-5660 with the ticket number; confirm the ticket is in the right queue and get the agent's name and a reference for the call.
  3. Supervisor review. When a ticket passes roughly 30 days without movement, request supervisor review explicitly — trade press documented 6–8 week waits at this rung in fall 2026, which is why you climb to it on time, not late.
  4. Congressional casework (last resort). Carrier-reported: a congressional office's casework inquiry is the traditional final lever on a stuck federal record. It is slow, it is not a shortcut, and it works best with a documented ticket history — another reason rung one matters.

Realistic waits, honestly: FMCSA publishes no resolution timeline for Motus record cases. Carrier and trade-press reporting through fall 2026 puts manual corrections at several weeks, with documented worst cases at 6–8 weeks for supervisor review. A complete first ticket is the only variable in that range you control.

The scripts are the difference

Knowing the ladder is free. Climbing it is scripted in the Playbook: the word-for-word ticket bodies, the phone openers, the day-30 supervisor request, and the close — name, reference number, next step — on every call.
