Case 09 · Motus problem file

Motus has your legal name wrong

STUCK  Readout first. Full fix below. This page asks for nothing — no login, no PIN, no email.

What it means
The data on your FMCSA record doesn't match your real legal business. In the Motus migration this stopped being hypothetical: CCJ documented the system overwriting a Texas carrier's legal name with another company's name (September 2026). A wrong name is not cosmetic — insurance filings match on legal name, so a corrupted name silently unposts your insurance next.
Whose side the fix is on
FMCSA's — record data is corrected by the agency, on proof
First move
Screenshot the wrong record today, then open an AskFMCSA ticket for a record correction with your formation documents attached. Date-stamped proof of what the record showed protects you with brokers and insurers while it's fixed.
Attach first
Articles of organization, EIN confirmation letter, screenshot of the incorrect record (dated), and the correct data spelled out field by field.
Realistic wait
Manual record corrections are carrier-reported at several weeks in fall 2026. The insurance side-effects (mismatched filings) may need a second fix at your insurer once the name is corrected.
Escalation ladder
AskFMCSA correction ticket with proof + dated screenshot → Contact Center with ticket number → after correction, have your insurer confirm their filing name matches the corrected record exactly.

What's actually happening

Motus merged records from the Portal, URS, and Licensing & Insurance systems. Merges collide: similar names, shared filing services, and duplicate records are how one company's data lands on another's record. The Texas name-overwrite case reached the trade press because the carrier's loaded freight was stranded at roadside inspections while the record said he was someone else.

The fix, in order

  1. Document the corruption firstScreenshot the record with the date visible, and pull your SAFER snapshot. If brokers or inspectors question the record mid-correction, dated proof that it's a known records error is your only cover.
  2. Spell out the correction field by fieldIn the ticket, list each wrong field, what it shows, and what it should show. Reviewers correct what you enumerate; a ticket that just says 'my record is wrong' earns a clarifying question and another week.
  3. Attach the formation proofArticles of organization and the EIN confirmation letter establish the true legal name. These two documents settle every name question — include both in the first message.
  4. Re-match your filings after the correctionOnce the name is fixed, confirm with your insurer that the name on their BMC filing matches the corrected record character-for-character, and ask your BOC-3 agent the same. A corrected name with filings under the old (wrong) name recreates the insurance-inactive problem.

Read the label

Carrier-reported, not in FMCSA's guides: carriers whose records were cross-contaminated found the error fastest by checking the record after any FMCSA interaction — migration-era records can change without notice. A monthly sixty-second record check is cheap insurance while Motus stabilizes.

Questions carriers ask about this one

How did another company's name get on my record?

The honest answer is that FMCSA has not published a cause. What is documented: Motus merged several legacy systems' data, trade press (CCJ, September 2026) verified at least one full name overwrite, and record errors cluster in merged fields. The correction path doesn't depend on the cause.

Can I keep operating while my name is wrong?

Carefully — the risk is practical, not theoretical. Roadside inspections and broker checks read the record, not your articles of organization. Keep dated screenshots and formation documents in the truck/company file, fix the record as fast as the queue allows, and expect insurance-matching problems until it posts correctly.

Will fixing the name break my insurance filing?

It can, briefly, in reverse: filings are name-matched, so after the name correction your insurer's filing must match the corrected name. Step 4 exists because carriers fixed the name, then discovered the insurance unposted — plan both halves in one week.
